Meerkat Pans

The Meerkat Experience is a journey not just to see unique desert living creatures, but also one that will result in serious introspection as you realize the sheer vastness of our planet and come to terms with our slight impact – make life count.

Situated in the middle of dry savanna is the Makgadikgadi Pan – the resultant salt pan from Lake Makgadikgadi that once spanned an area greater than Switzerland. In series with the neighbouring sister pans (Nxai, Sua and Nwetwe) these form the largest salt pan in the world. This is big sky country, and it is no wonder that a night spent in this remote wilderness, yields a starlit sky that one can only marvel at. The simplistic campsite echoes the ancient traveler experience, a warming fire and a bedroll to comfort in the predawn chill. The pan experience can be included from either Maun or Kasane, but can be inaccessible during the rainy season when the area can become flooded.

Few animals can sustain themselves for the dry season, but after rains these pans form an important grazing flush as the annual grass species flourish, rich in nutrients, they attract migratory zebra and wilderbeest. The nutrience rich vleis attract migratory birds with Sua Pans being home to one of the last remaining Greater Flamingo breeding colonies. The pans are synonymous with their local resident populations of Meerkat.

Game viewing is possible by vehicle and on walks. Accompanied by your knowledgeable guide you will encounter the wild and some of the more fascinating of its residents.
