Mongoose Delta

The Mongoose Delta experience appeals to the most intrepid naturalist. The camp is set and broken to only exist for your experience. Deep within the Okavango Delta Botswana, the site is only accessible from Maun for a few months of the year (depending on water levels).

Known as the Jewel of the Kalahari, the Okavango delta is one of the few rivers in the world not to reach the ocean. Flood waters from the Angolan highlands flood the delta annually resulting in one of the key natural wonders of the world. This reliable source of water attracts and supports large herds of herbivores, and the carnivores that follow. The sheer vastness of this water wilderness will captivate even the most experienced traveller. Large herds of elephants can be seen from the water, fish eagles punctuate the stillness of the day, and, at night, on occasion the roar of some passing lions will raise primal emotions as you move you chair closer to the evening fire.

Renowned conservationist Dr Steve Boyes said of the Okavango Delta “An otherworldly place lost in time as the mist rises from the river valleys to burn off in the forest as the sun rises. This land of source lakes, rivers, forests and wildlife has an overpowering sense of place. A wildness born into all of us instantly recognises this primordial wilderness as home. Surrounded by the abundance of life we live connected to all living things around us. A life tide that has ebbed and flowed since the dawn of time across time, space and dimension. It is by sitting quietly, connected, in wild places like this that we learn what it is to be human ”.

Game viewing is possible by boat, mekoro and on walks. Accompanied by your knowledgeable guide you will be enchanted by nature and return some sanctuary for your soul.

Best time to visit Mongoose Delta

Like much of Africa, Botswana is, generally speaking, warm throughout the year; even its coolest period, from June to September, varies little from the rest of the year, reaching heights of around 24˚C at times. The coolest period, notably, is also the height of the tourist season, since, besides being the least hot, it is also the period with the lowest volume of rain, and the highest concentration of wild animals out in the region’s sprawling natural parks. Go during this time, and your experience will be a little cooler and a little drier, and involve a few more sightings of wild wonders; but go more or less any other time, and any weather differences will be, for the most part, negligible. Please be aware that accessibility to Mongoose and Genet are water-level dependent – at times there may not be enough water to reach Mongoose Delta by boat or too much water to reach Genet Camp by road.
